Need To File A Federal Tax Extension?
Here's the scoop for U.S. citizens who need to file a federal tax return extension.
As the IRS website says: "Please be aware that an extension of time to file your return does not grant you any extension of time to pay your tax liability."
Individuals can be granted an automatic 6-month extension of time to file their federal tax returns if they correctly file Form 4868 (Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Income Tax Return) by the tax due date -- this year, it's April 17, because April 15 falls on a Sunday and April 16 is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia.
