Sanford Phippen (1942 - )

Sandy Phippen (born 19 June 1942) grew up in Hancock Point, graduated from the University of Maine in 1964, received a Master's degree from Syracuse University, and taught English in the public schools of central New York for fifteen years before returning to Maine. Phippen teaches English at Orono High School and is an essayist and a writer of fiction.

Phippen's works include:

  • A History of The Town of Hancock (1978)
  • Cheap Gossip: The Letters from Liverpool (1989), collected columns from the Tuesday Weekly of Ellsworth
  • The Police Know Everything (1982), short stories
  • People Trying to be Good (short stories)
  • Kitchen Boy (1996), a novel
  • The Messiah in the Memorial Gym and Other Writings 1973-1998 (1998), with introduction by Maine poet Constance Hunting
  • Standing Just Outside the Door (2002), a play

He's also edited the fiction collection The Best Maine Stories: The Marvelous Mystery (1986/1994; with Charles Waugh and Martin Harry Greenberg) and the non-fiction High Clouds Soaring, Storms Driving Low: The Letters of Ruth Moore (1993).
